A Week In Guatemala

I wanted to take a couple minutes to update you on Guatemala and what it’s been like so far!

I got to Guatemala late on January 25 and we jumped right in to some orientation, getting to know the city and talking about what this semester will look like.

I live in a beautiful house with the other five interns and the six full time staff members. We have a backyard with views of volcano’s, a huge kitchen, a washer and dryer, wifi and a reading nook in our room. (Yes. Seriously, with Christmas lights and it is perfection.)

Several of you have asked what a typical week looks like here and I don’t have an answer for that, really, because every day and week looks different. But I can tell you what it has looked like so far!

Our Monday’s are pretty solid. We start the day of with worship and then have various staff/intern meetings in the morning. We go over the weeks schedule, we meal plan, we discuss whatever else needs to be discussed. We are in class all afternoon. We have a “Discover Your Calling” class and an “Identity” class. We have only done the introductions so far, but they will both be interesting and I know I’ll learn a lot!

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are more of our ministry days. This past week we spent each morning at an orphanage called Casa Shalom. Our first two mornings we met with a staff member, Drew. He told us a lot about the kids and a lot about trauma and how it affects kids. It was heavy and heartbreaking but so good. On Thursday we got to watch the baby house (eleven kids age 1 month-2) so the house moms could go to training. It was SO much fun! I love the children and am truly so excited to see them again this coming week!

Friday we typically start off with a little worship and then have been listening to a podcast series on relationships. The past two weeks it’s been on trusting God & trusting others. So good. We also have our “Orphan Care” class, which is more of a dialogue between us and I think it will be really interesting.

Friday evenings are family night! This past Friday evening we ordered pizza, played games and watched Cool Runnings. Fun!

Saturday mornings we do our designated chore. The rest of Saturday and Sunday are really free. We typically eat a dinner out, explore, do shopping, listen to podcasts, blog, go to church and just relax!

So that’s a little of my typical week. It always changes and there are always people coming and going at our house. The Lord is so present and tangible and I am so excited about what He has planned for us during our time in Antigua!
